About

St. Michael’s Lent is a 40-day period of prayer and penance, inspired by the tradition described in “The Little Flowers of St. Francis” by St. Bonaventure. Beginning on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15) and ending on the feast of the Holy Archangels—St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael (September 29)—this devotion offers the faithful a unique opportunity to renew their faith and deepen their union with God. The devotion is rooted in the example of St. Francis of Assisi, who observed this period with great reverence, penance, and spiritual fervor. St. Bonaventure recounts how St. Francis, during his Lenten retreat in honor of St. Michael, experienced profound spiritual graces and heavenly contemplation. Over the centuries, Franciscans have kept this tradition alive, making it accessible to both lay people and religious, even though it is not part of the Church’s official liturgical calendar. Ways to observe St. Michael’s Lent include daily prayer (such as the Litany of St. Michael), acts of penance (fasting or giving up something meaningful), charity (practicing the corporal works of mercy), and regular participation in the Sacraments, especially Confession and Holy Mass. This period is a rich opportunity to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis, drawing closer to the Lord through prayer, sacrifice, and love for others. Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle!
